Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer

About Us
Maharishi Foundation International (MFI) is a US-registered non-profit that supports the development of new technologies and outreach opportunities for the worldwide Transcendental Meditation® (TM®) organisations. Over the past 60 years, more than 10 million people worldwide have learned the TM technique through personal instruction by tens of thousands of certified teachers.

MFI is a growing, fully-remote team of around 50 people, located around the globe but mainly in North America and Europe. As an organisation we are committed to leveraging modern technology and progressive management practices to make the TM technique and its related programmes more available to people everywhere.

We favor a healthy and balanced work environment with opportunities for personal development.

Job Summary
As MFI’s sole QA Engineer, you will advocate for quality throughout the company, beginning with developing a deep familiarity with its products: React Native iOS and Android apps used by students and further members of the TM community, and a web app primarily used by teachers to manage students as they progress through learning TM.

You will own testing as a kingdom of work. You will work directly with product managers to ensure high quality releases and with engineers to make sure new code is well-understood, and that all of its angles have been properly considered and tested.

Over time you will seek to fully stabilize MFI's products and speed up the development and release process by advocating for high-value changes, aggressively testing for regressions, building test suites, and seeking process improvements wherever you see them delivering value.

About You
As a QA team of one, you can define and manage your own work and deliver value with minimal input.

You're an alert, critical person who seeks the root of problems, and can develop a clear, trusted sense of priority and value within a big picture.

You're comfortable with the general concepts of API-driven app development and testing within that problem space. Ideally you've worked on React Native projects before.

You understand and are opinionated about QA's role in continuously improving the overall process of building and releasing software. You're interested in connecting this higher conceptual understanding of the QA discipline to testing and pursuing better process.

You have a service-oriented mindset, and seek to understand and create sustainable solutions to problems where you see them.

You seek to identify siloed knowledge and get it better distributed. When you see something you think should be better documented, you document it.

You're sufficiently comfortable in the command line to resolve merge conflicts and build issues yourself.

You're technical enough to develop a mental map of MFI's overall system architecture over time, along with a high-level understanding for how each piece of that architecture works, in order to become someone who can help resolve issues such as they may arise at that level.

You're conceptually familiar with or have worked on CRUD apps, and are familiar with basic database concepts.

You're sufficiently comfortable with code to review changes in order to understand them, to debug issues by following leads in the codebase, to make and deploy small changes yourself, and to own automated testing.
