Product Designer (UX, UI)

Who We Are and What We Do

First Principle is a creative venture studio based in New York City and serving clients and startups all over the world. Our focus is on helping organizations create new products and proof-of-concepts for emerging technologies or imagining a brand-new version of an existing service or product from the ground up.

We’re small, tight-knit and looking to hire. We think you can do big things with small teams of generalist product designers and we’re looking for people to help lead projects under the design direction of our partners. You will take projects from idea to exact pixels and own large parts of the responsibilities in making a product successful.

Self-starters, people who like to explore, tough question askers and those comfortable with iterating and throwing work away usually get along with us.

You’ll Need To Be Comfortable…

  • Talking about big ideas and small details, as well as jumping between the two frequently.
  • Writing clearly and presenting your thoughts well (we do a lot asynchronously).
  • Getting excited and then getting to work.
  • Managing deadlines and meeting commitments.
  • Doing both wireframes and visual design.
  • Drive light research or take part in larger research initiatives.
  • Creating a design system from scratch.
  • Producing detailed interaction design and states within screens (every tap, every reaction, every piece of copy, etc).
  • Taking direction, but not taking it to heart. We sketch, explore, iterate and throw work away often.
We don’t expect anyone to be 100% proficient in 100% of these, but we’re looking for people excited to get there and eager to learn and collaborate, regardless of education and experience.

Working at First Principle

Our environment is casual, fun and challenging. We push each other for the best work and question everything. You’ll learn a lot, we’ll learn a lot and together we’ll ship great work.

We work at a calm, reasonable pace where fire drills are the outstanding exception. We appreciate our own time to think and explore and will provide you with the space to do the same. Because of the space and freedom we allow, we ask for people to be honest, on time, meet commitments and checkin regularly if you’re remote so we can all stay in sync. You will mostly self-manage, but be highly collaborative from a design standpoint. We do this through a lot of asynchronous communication peppered with calls and face to face meetings as needed.

We like this quote: “Big teams rarely defeat small teams, because while they might have a goal, and even a structure, they have trouble maintaining cohesion. Mostly, though, they spend so much time communicating that they don’t have enough time to do great work.” - Seth Godin

You can either work from our studio in Williamsburg Brooklyn or anywhere in the world as long as your work day overlaps several hours with EST. If you’re not in New York, we’ll fly you here several times a year.

We offer a flexible work environment, competitive salaries, medical and dental benefits, four weeks vacation, personal days as needed, paid holidays and whatever equipment you need to get your job done.
