Head of Marketing & Partnerships

Fluorescent is a fully-remote eCommerce software design and development company located in second bedrooms and home offices across Canada. As official Shopify partners, we actively develop and maintain a small catalogue of premium Shopify templates (called "themes").

Our team is small, but growing. We value autonomy, collaboration, and empathy for the customer. Being a remote team means that we work asynchronously on most of our projects. We believe in empowerment over management, and trust that each member is self-sufficient in delivering their work while asking for direction or support when necessary.

We offer a competitive salary, four weeks vacation, fully remote work, and an opportunity to get in on the ground floor. Getting in on the ground floor means that you're going to have an impact on the way the company works. It also means that there won't be guidelines and that processes will occasionally be vague and ambiguous. If you're someone who needs a straightforward process to follow, this role might not be for you.

A number of our team members have opted to work a four-day work week. If you'd like a four-day work week and you're the right candidate, we're happy to discuss it. Quality of life is very important to us.

The salary band for the full-time position is $80,000 - $100,000/year.

About the Role

As Head of Marketing & Partnerships at Fluorescent, you'll have the opportunity to build the marketing function at an up-and-coming Shopify partner brand from scratch. While this is an exciting opportunity for a marketer, the absence of a core marketing team means that you'll be relying on a fixed marketing budget and your own skills as a content creator to implement your vision (if you feel that you're too advanced in your career to do on-the-ground work - this role might not be for you!). In addition to those activities, you'll also be responsible for growing Fluorescent's reputation within the Shopify ecosystem through regular public appearances and meetings with partner firms.

In the first three months, you will:

  • Create a marketing plan that aligns with Fluorescent's high-level goals and values.
  • Manage and expand our partnership program by creating long-lasting and meaningful relationships with other members of the Shopify ecosystem.
  • Take ownership of existing SEO, SMM, product marketing and content marketing at the company.
  • Build your knowledge of our existing product catalogue so that you can speak about our products authoritatively with Shopify merchants and partners.

In the first twelve months, you will:

  • Implement your marketing plan with the help of a fixed monthly budget.
  • Continuously refine your methods using meaningful and up-to-date research and analytics.
  • Spearhead outbound marketing efforts by appearing publicly as a representative of the company.
  • Reliably translate your work into sales.
  • Actively contribute to product planning sessions with the team by reflecting your experiences marketing our product catalogue.
  • Take ownership of the Fluorescent brand - building our reputation across the Shopify ecosystem.

Relevant Skills

The ability to conduct thorough customer research and to translate that research into an excellent pitch that speaks to real customer needs (ideally in the language of the customers themselves).

Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to work remotely and self start. You feel comfortable in front of a camera (for product walkthroughs or webinars) or being interviewed on a podcast (or even asking to be interviewed on one!).

Experience working with Shopify or a similar eCommerce platform is important to performing well in this role. However, relevant experience working as a marketer within a software development context will not be discounted. You should have an appreciation for high-end interface design. Experience working for a design-oriented or design-lead company is considered an asset.

Experience with and knowledge of contemporary SEO, SMM, product marketing and content marketing strategies are required to perform well in this role. Experience with marketing analytics software and modern tracking methods is also required.

Finally, the role requires that you have the skills of a content creator and it is unsuitable to someone who is only comfortable working at a high level. This could be as someone who makes written, video or audio content. Come prepared with a pitch of how these skills might be put to good use within a broader marketing strategy.

Diversity and Inclusion

At Fluorescent, we believe that a diverse, inclusive company is a strong company. We encourage Indigenous people, women, people of colour, people with disabilities, members of LGBTQ+ community, and other under-represented groups to apply.

If you don't meet all of our requirements exactly or have taken a non-traditional professional path we still want to hear from you! Use your cover letter to tell us about your unique experience - we understand that talent comes from many places and that skills are transferable.

Send a cover letter, resume and an (optional) short introductory video. Your cover letter and video of introduction should address themselves to the role and relevant work experience. They need not be excessively formal — we're people too. Both are required parts of the application process.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Note that all Fluorescent roles require a short assignment to be completed after the initial interview - this should take 2-4 hours and is used to ensure that our hiring processes are merit based.
